Szold's Department Store was a Peoria institution for more than 100 years. Opened in 1880 by Joseph Szold and Phil Eisler on Tyng Street, the store had a little bit of everything and families made regular, even weekly, visits to purchase one necessity or another. In 1898, it moved to its more familiar spot on Southwest Adams and survived into the 1980s. Today, Peorians fondly recall buying sweets at the Szold's candy counter just inside the front doors, shopping for 45s in the basement record shop and picking out prom dresses in the young women's section.
