This internationally famous symbol of St. Louis is a 630 foot stainless steel monument to westward expansion in the United States. It is the world’s tallest arch and the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere. It sits at the site of St. Louis’ founding on the west bank of the Mississippi River. The arch was designed by Eero Saarinen in 1947. Construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1965 at a cost of 13 million. The Arch opened to the public on June 10, 1967. No trip to the Arch is complete without a scary ride on a tiny tram to the observation area at the top.
