Back in the day when home video game systems were a new and exciting invention, Mattel introduced Intellivision. Test marketed in 1979, it went nationwide in 1980. From 1980-1983, three million units were sold. Intellivision’s unique controller was the first to use a directional thumb pad. This game system also used a tile-based playfield, which offered detailed graphics and color. Intellivision was discontinued in 1990, but lives on through reissues of games and game systems.
